Food

Advancing food systems that are good for people and planet

The State of Affairs

We are committed to supporting a healthier way to produce, purchase and consume food. Too many people are food-insecure, and many who do have access to food still face high malnutrition rates.

Meanwhile, our food system contributes to some of our biggest environmental challenges.

We need fresh practices and policies informed by insights drawn from data and evidence.

Food Systems Must Adapt

Many consequences of climate change undermine the stability of global food systems, decreasing food security and diet quality, and exposing vulnerable populations to multiple forms of malnutrition.

At the same time, food systems are responsible for 25-30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Food needs to be grown and processed, transported, distributed, prepared, consumed, and sometimes disposed of. Each of these steps creates greenhouse gases that trap the sun’s heat and contribute to climate change.

Emission reduction from food production is essential to tackle climate change and to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C or well below 2°C.

Our Strategy

  • 1Good Food Data and Science Innovation: We foster innovative platforms, establishing vital metrics and datasets that offer the evidence and tools necessary to achieve a sustainable food system.
  • 2Good Food Policy: We back projects that generate evidence and realign market incentives to reflect the true cost of food on human health and the environment.
  • 3Good Food Public Purchasing: We assist major public institutions in shifting procurement practices towards prioritizing food that supports good nutrition, resilient local economies, environmental sustainability, and racial equity throughout the value chain.
